This is an installation guide on how to install PureInsight software on a virtual appliance
Currently this guide is for using ESXi Host Client on VMWare vSphere
Prerequisites:
Virtual Server Requirements:
VMWare ESXi Version 7 (7.0.3)
ESXi Host Client Version 2.9 (2.9.2)
Virtual Appliance Requirements:
Make sure that the virtual machine server has enough resources to accommodate PureInsight basic system requirements.
Resource | Minimum | Recommended |
---|---|---|
CPU | 4 logical CPU cores | 8 logical CPU cores |
Memory | 16GB Memory | 64GB Memory |
Storage | 512GB (Root Partition) | 512GB (Root Partition) |
Management Interface | 1GbE | 1GbE or 10GbE (if downloading/uploading large files) |
For the best I/O performance it is recommended to have a separate block storage device mounted onto PureInsight to use as PCAP storage. This way, the I/O of the host OS storage devices are not hindered by the amount of I/O taking place during packet processing.
Configure the Network Interfaces in the Virtual Host Appliance
Configuration of virtual network adapters are needed to be able to access PureInsight after installation has been completed. If a virtual network adapter has not been configured yet, a network interface can be attached into the appliance after PureInsight has been installed.
Downloaded Copy of the ISO file
A copy of the ISO file named PureInsight_1_71_standalone.iso is needed for this installation. It can be downloaded via Quantea’s FTP server or via USB thumb drive.
This .iso file can exceed 1GB so it is recommended to already have downloaded the file onto the client accessing ESXi Host Client beforehand. Also it is recommended that the client is able to have adequate bandwidth to be able to download large files onto the virtual machine server.
For requesting a copy of the PureInsight .iso file please send an email to support@quantea.com.
Installation Passcode and Installation Passkey (In the Later Steps)
Every instance of installation of PureInsight will require a unique set of installation keys.
During the beginning of the installation process, PureInsight will generate a unique passcode - the Installation Passcode.
Email this Installation Passcode to support@quantea.com and one of Quantea’s staff will send an authorized Installation Passkey to enter in the installation prompt.
Without the passcode and passkey PureInsight installation will not be possible.
Preparing the Virtual Machine Host
Login into the ESXi Host Client and create a new virtual machine
You will go through this prompt in creating a new virtual machine. Go ahead and select [Create a new virtual machine] and press [NEXT].
In the [Select a name and guest OS], go ahead and name your PureInsight virtual appliance into any name desired.
For [Compatibility] select [ESXi 7.0 U2 virtual machine].
For [Guest OS family] select [Linux].
For [Guest OS version] select [CentOS 7 (64-bit)].
In the [Select storage] section, go ahead and select the block storage device that will be used as the operating system storage (or root partition) of the virtual machine. After selecting the local storage device press [NEXT].
In the [Customize settings] section, go ahead and select the [Virtual Hardware] then proceed with the values based on the minimum or recommended settings in the Prerequisites section of this document. Here are the values inputted in this guide:
[CPU], select 8
[Memory], type 32000 and select [MB]
[Hard disk 1], type 512 and select GB. This is the operating system root partition.
Click on [Add hard disk], a new row will be created for a new drive. In the [New Hard disk] section, go ahead and type [2000] in the input field and select [GB].
Leave the other settings as-is and click on [NEXT]
In section 5 [Ready to complete], go ahead and verify that the settings are correct based on the steps followed earlier. After verifying the settings go ahead and click on [Finish] to complete the setup.
After clicking [Finish], wait for the virtual machine to be created.
After the creation of the virtual machine as finished. We are now ready to load the PureInsight ISO file. In the virtual machine summary, go to the right corner where it says [Action] then click on [Edit Settings].
In the [Edit settings] section, we are now allowed to load an ISO file during system boot. Scroll down to where it says [CD/DVD Drive 1] and select [Datastore ISO file].
Go ahead and click on [Upload] in the upper left corner and select PureInsight_1_71_standalone.iso on your client and then wait for the ISO file to finish uploading.
Click on [Save] to load the ISO file onto the virtual machine.
Launch the virtual machine and access the virtual console to proceed with the PureInsight installation steps.
PureInsight Installation
Use of the ESXi virtual console is required to install PureInsight
Upon launching the virtual machine for the first time, the mounted ISO file will load.
Wait for a few minutes to load all the necessary installation steps.
In the boot menu go ahead and select [Install PureInsight Software]
Wait for all the installation elements to load.
Before the system installation commences. A unique Installation Passcode is created with a prompt to enter the Installation Passkey.
Installation Passcode: 2162ON36EC Enter Installation Passkey:
Email the Installation Passcode to directly Quantea staff or support@quantea.com
Quantea will return an Installation Passkey. Enter that Passkey in the prompt. The installation will commence.
Note: Entering the wrong Installation Passkey will result in the installation program aborting. The system will reboot and a new Installation Passcode will be generated. The new Installation Passcode will need to be sent to Quantea in order to receive the Installation Passkey.
The installation will go through automatically, wait for the installation to finish. The system will reboot after all the installation steps are completed.
By default, the network interface run in DHCP, to setup static IP configuration please wait for the installation to finish before configuring the static IP.
Accessing PureInsight and Evaluation License Installation
After the system finishes booting, the PureInsight virtual appliance will display the IP address to access the GUI. Type in https://<ip_address>/pureinsight to go to PureInsight.
Use the default login credential for admin as: admin / adminquantea to login into PureInsight
Ignore the [License has Expired] warning message and go directly to the [License Update] page on the upper left corner of the menu bar [Admin Manager] → [License] → [License Update]
In the [License] page, enter the two evaluation license keys provided by Quantea. The expiration date will display on the right. After both license keys are entered, click on [Verify] to apply the license keys.
If no error message is displayed on the page after clicking [Verify] then PureInsight is ready to be used during the entire duration of the evaluation date.
